ENERGY
RETAILERS SUPPORT ZERO DEATHS FROM CARBON
MONOXIDE
13th September 2006
The Energy Retail Association has responded
to the All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety
Group’s report on raising awareness
of carbon monoxide poisoning announced today
(Shouting about a Silent Killer). The report
supports last year’s findings by the
industry that dangerous appliances are the
biggest cause of deaths and that alerting
consumers to the dangers of carbon monoxide
is the responsibility of a range of stakeholders
including the Government, CORGI, appliance
manufacturers and the industry.
Duncan Sedgwick, CEO of the Energy Retail
Association said, “We are pleased
that the report acknowledges that the problem
of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning should
be shared. We support a target of zero deaths
from CO, which is why energy retailers make
the biggest contribution to reducing incidents
by providing CO detectors, information leaflets,
poster campaigns and warnings on bills.
We also welcome recommendations that others,
including Government, should play their
part.
The evidence shows clearly that carbon
monoxide fatalities are caused by poorly
installed and maintained appliances. It
is for Government to educate the public
in the same way as they run campaigns on
drink driving and fire safety.”

Notes for editors:
The Energy Retail Association established
in October 2003 is the only dedicated trade
association for Britain’s domestic
energy suppliers. All the main energy suppliers
operating in the domestic market in Great
Britain are members of the association.
The ERA was set up at the instigation of
the energy supply industry in order to identify
areas where the industry can work together
for the common good without competitive
advantage. As part of its work the ERA seeks
to improve the profile of the sector and
represent the interests of energy retailers.
