ENERGY
SUPPLIERS WELCOME SUSTAINABLE ENERGY BILL
21st June 2006
Today, the Energy Retail Association welcomes
the announcement that the Climate Change
and Sustainable Energy is due to receive
Royal Assent. The Private Members Bill was
been promoted by Mark Lazarowicz, Labour/Co-op
MP for Edinburgh North and Leith.
Duncan Sedgwick, Chief Executive of the
Energy Retail Association, says “I
would like to congratulate Mark and his
team for their efforts in achieving Royal
Assent for this important Bill. This is
an important time for the Government to
be promoting energy efficiency as we all
need to become more aware of the energy
we consume. We now need to work together
to make sure that microgeneration fulfils
its true potential”.
The Bill is designed to enable households
and local groups to install renewable energy
in their own houses and communities. It
has been widely agreed that small scale
renewable energy – microgeneration
– can make a significant contribution
to the UK’s domestic energy needs.
Microgeneration is a term used for the generation
of energy (heat or electricity) by individual
householders or small groups of householders
and communities. It can take various forms,
including micro-wind, fuel cells and solar
panels.
Notes to editors:
The Energy Retail Association was established
in October 2003 is the only dedicated trade
association for Britain’s domestic
energy suppliers (British Gas, EDF Energy,
Powergen, RWE npower, Scottish Power, Scottish
and Southern Electric). All the main energy
suppliers operating in the domestic market
in Great Britain are members of the association.
The ERA was set up at the instigation of
the energy supply industry in order to identify
areas where the industry can work together
for the common good without competitive
advantage.
The energy retail industry has recently
set up the Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66
99) which can help people having difficulty
paying their electricity and gas bills.
Services include grants, free insulation,
energy efficiency advice, benefits assessment
and tailored payment schemes.
