About us

The Energy Retail Association (ERA), formed in 2003, represents the six main electricity and gas suppliers in the domestic and micro business market in Great Britain.

The ERA works closely with Government, NGOs, charities and other organisations in England, Scotland and Wales to ensure a coordinated approach is taken on the key issues affecting our industry and the British consumer.

All the main energy suppliers, operating in the residential market, in Great Britain are members of the Association – British Gas, EDF Energy, RWE npower, E.ON, ScottishPower, and SSE.

The ERA focuses on finding ways to continually improve all customers’ experiences with their electricity and gas suppliers. This means that we lead on issues such as:

  • Tackling fuel poverty and protecting vulnerable customers
  • Shaping energy efficiency and microgeneration schemes
  • Ensuring good sales practice
  • Developing industry standards for customer billing
  • Preventing debt and disconnections
  • Smart meters
  • Other UK and EU regulatory issues
