What are Electricity Display Devices?
Electricity Display Devices (EDDs) are clip-on devices that provide customers with approximate information on the amount of electricity being used.
The Government announced, on 29th April, that there will be no mandated roll-out of free electricity display devices (EDDs) with replacement meters or to consumers who request them. This is an important step forward as these devices are a distraction from the bigger goal of smart meters. Energy suppliers will continue to provide display devices to some customers as part of a voluntary agreement with the Government.

How do EDDs compare with smart meters?
EDDs will not provide the accurate two-way information that smart meters do and which is necessary for accurate billing and the end to meter readings. Neither will they monitor gas usage which is responsible for the greater part of our energy use.
The significant differences between EDDs and smart meters are clearly illustrated in our Smart Meter Fact Sheet.
